Corporate environments today are fast-paced, ever-changing, and always trying to become more productive. It’s a breeding ground for stress—as any tried and true office worker knows. Corporate wellness programs are often introduced to help manage the chaos and improve the health of workers company-wide…but do they actually work?

There’s a fine line between a successful corporate employee wellness program and a failing one. This article will help you discern between the two on your way to creating your own!

Our ReverseSit program is one of the most accessible fitness platforms for office workers in the world, and we’re going to show you how it can be integral to your new (or pre-existing) corporate wellness program and overall health.

What Is Corporate Wellness?

Companies are starting to recognize, now more than ever, that employee health is paramount to a well-functioning work environment.

  • Less sick days
  • Heightened efficiency
  • Improved morale
  • Higher employee retention

—these are the goals.

In a nutshell, the things that contribute to those goals, and the program they’re a part of, are what makes up a corporate health wellness program.

Now, your company may or may not have a corporate wellness program in place. Whether they do or don’t, there’s nothing to worry about. Because regardless of how formal it is, anybody can (and should) create their own corporate wellness program to suit their needs.

So whether you have resources in place or are starting from scratch, we’re going to learn about what it takes to make this work for you

You and your employees…

you and your colleagues…

or just you and yourself!

5 Components of a Corporate Wellness Program

It’s time to dive into the meat of what actually constitutes a corporate wellness program. How much flexibility you or your company has in each of these areas will vary. They’re important to know about and understand though, regardless, as you never know when creative opportunities might arise to help optimize one given area or another.

Fitness & Physical Health

Since office work is so sedentary in nature, getting people active and moving is often at the forefront of any corporate wellness initiative. This is exactly why we designed ReverseSit—we wanted to make it easy for any individual or office to participate in a program designed specifically for office workers. Put your health first and give us a try today.

Mental Health

Learning how to manage the unique stresses of your workplace is crucial to your mental health. Whether that’s prioritizing your work tasks, learning how to communicate with coworkers who have…particular personalities, or ensuring your work is moving you towards the goals you have set for the future. All this, plus your life outside of work, can be a lot to manage, indeed.

Team-Building & Social Activities

Bonding with your colleagues might not always be top of mind, but in order for a workplace to be successful and healthy at its roots, there needs to be some level of social cohesion. Whatever your business, it has a goal, and one of those goals has to be the working together of and collective aim of every employee. It also just feels nice to work with people you like!

Education & Training

There needs to be opportunities for you and everyone else to progress their careers and skill sets through continuing education, workshops, seminars, speaking events, and more. The opportunity to move forward, if you want it, should (ideally) be supplied to you. If it’s not, it might be an initiative you need to take on yourself by signing up for a night class or online course.

Work-Life Balance

Important to everyone is the balance between your work life and your life life (i.e. everything outside of work). Let’s face it—not everyone is crazy passionate about the work they have to do, but we do it for the betterment of ourselves, our families, and our communities. Trying to balance that with our hobbies, relationships, down-time and other interests is a delicate endeavour, indeed.

Tips for Creating Your Corporate Wellness Program

For each of the above components, let’s now look at some ways to optimize each one whether you’re doing it for yourself or a group of employees.

Physical Health: Tips

  • Do something every day, no matter how small; some sort of stretching, mobility, or exercise
  • Take movement breaks at work; at ReverseSit we have a collection of At-Your-Desk Routines that can be done in 5 minutes or less
  • Partner with your coworkers to hold each other accountable; go for walks, runs, hikes, or to the gym together!

Mental Health: Tips

  • Encourage open discussions with your boss and/or employees/colleagues about the work environment to learn how it can be optimized and less stressful
  • Recognize signs of burnout, in yourself and others, and learn when it’s time to take a break; fatigue, irritation, and lack of motivation are all such signs.
  • Set realistic workload expectations, don’t overburden yourself and unnecessarily stress yourself out; set goals you can hit and constantly be in a state of accomplishment.

Team-Building: Tips

  • Suggest or implement social activities that bring the office together; team lunches/drinks, holiday parties, and even your regular meetings can be an occasion to bring everyone together.
  • Celebrate employee milestones and achievements, from the small to the big; if your boss isn’t doing this for you, do it for yourself and others! Motivation and optimism are guaranteed results.
  • If you’re in an environment with multiple departments, find ways to bring everyone together and encourage collaboration; working together in an open-concept area of the building, for example.

 Education: Tips

  • If you’re in charge of a workplace, organize things like lunch-and-learn sessions or personal development seminars, whether online or with an in-person speaker.
  • Offer incentives like tuition reimbursement programs or discounts to online platforms that you or your employees can engage in on your own time.
  • Start a mentorship program where more experienced employees can work with the newer recruits to fast-track development and promote cohesion within the company.

Work-Life: Tips

  • A lot of office work can be done remotely, and having a hybrid system that gives employees the option to do 1-2 days a week at home might significantly improve morale and overall work-life balance.
  • If your employees have unused vacation time or PTO days, encourage them to use them! They’re there for a reason, and what you miss in a day’s work you get back double in a (hopefully) happy and rejuvenated employee!
  • Small gestures go a long way; implement little policies that respect the time and lives of those you work with—leaving half an hour early on Fridays, for example, is something that does little in the form of hampering work but a lot in terms of employee satisfaction.

By implementing these tips, you can create a corporate wellness program that supports a healthier, happier, and more productive workforce. Whether you’re starting from scratch or improving an existing initiative, these steps will help you work towards something better!
